The Prism Condos, to double as the Borden Ave 24-hour Light Clock

Prism Condos, Hunters Point, Long Island City, LIC, Queens, NYC, Queens, 11101

Broker blogger Andrew Fine has the scoop on the building quietly (haha) going up next to One Hunters Point on Borden Ave, between Vernon & 5th St. Facing the LIRR Railyard.

“”The Prism” (working name for now), an 81 unit condo building, will rise 125 feet on Borden Avenue between 5th Street and Vernon. This no ordinary condo comes with a 24 hour color light clock. As you can see from the rendering (which will soon be updated), there is a gap in the middle of the building that gives the illusion of a twist. That gap will be filled with a 24 hour light display with one color for every hour.

The developer is also in talks with the MTA to see if it can project colors onto the monolith that houses the ventilation for the Midtown Tunnel a tad West of the new condo.”

Here’s what it looks like right now:

The Prism Condos are slated to have a curtain wall, which will be helpful in blocking out the drone of the diesel engine that idles all day long across the street at the LIRR railyard. And the light show… well… it’ll be, ahem, an interesting addition to the block.

#2 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

The name is not set in stone. I vote to keep it “The Prism”!

YUCK.

Who the hell wants a chaotic light show in the sky every damn nite? Also, when is the boycott of E&I Deli on vernon? Those people are EVIL

#5 Mark Herold / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Great. Let’s waste electricity and beam light on the Midtown Tunnel vent building so that it annoys everyone else who lives nearby. Morons.

#6 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Why is E&I more evil than Food Cellar? As I see it, those are the best 2 options for food in the neighborhood without having to trek to Greenpoint or out on Northern Blvd. (Though, if you do, The Garden in Greenpoint is better than E&I and Food Cellar combined).

At least E&I doesn’t say that it won’t acccept food stamps because it doesn’t want to attract “that crowd”. The Food Cellar also refuses coupons (presumably for the same reason). Their prices are just as bad and for the store that they’re trying to be, their produce sucks.

Also, when is that bar opening?

The owners and employees at E&I deli are extremely rude and nasty! I understand that it’s a volume business, but they treat customers like cattle in the rush to get their money and get them the hell out. Not only that, but they intentional overcharge for items- check your receipt sometime! Very shady.

I hope this economy kills this project! hipster/yuppy’sm is getting too close to home!

#9 Anti / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

That is absolutely horrendous. I live within a block of this and I don’t want a freakin light show every night! How the hell does something like this get approved???

#10 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

#9, hipsters, totally living in luxury condos. LOL.

On another note, why in the hell is anyone building these things in Great Depression II? Aren’t all these real estate builders and investors going to lose their shirts?

#11 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

light pollution. that’s absolutely light pollution. like that big advertising screen by the LIE that keeps my bedroom nice and bright at night. i guess light pollution goes with living in an urban setting but come on….

#12 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Oh wait eveyone has a problem with this, but the Pepsi sign is okay because it is iconic? Get real. God before we decide that are against it how about seeing the implementation of it and finding our more than the two sentences written here. Can we not be against anything new as a knee jerk reaction?

#13 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

The Pepsi Sign was there first.

#14 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

The Pepsi sign also isn’t beaming light into people’s bedrooms.

Anyway, why would anyone want to call attention the the ugly ventilation building by lighting it up? Bury the thing or cover it in ivy.

#15 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Some of you people really are crazy haters. Who says this will be a light show? It sounds like some colored lights that probably will look great and add something interesting to the block. And why would anyone object to having some cool lighting on the MTA vent buildings? It would look a lot better than a plain flat wall with nothing on it.
I think blogs attract miserable haters who love to complain for no reason . . .

The overcharging at E&I deli is the most annoying aspect of the place. It happens way more often than at any other place I’ve ever been to and I call them on it whenever it happens. From where I come from, openly stealing from your customers shouldn’t be the basis for your business model.

#17 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

16, or blogs attract real estate developers boosting their projects.

#18 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

This will all depend how it is done. If the light is positioned to radiate out of the building than it could create light pollution. However, if it is just used to wash the walls than the neighbors will nots get any radiation and all you will see are walls changing colors. Lets hope it will be the latter.

I don’t see why anyone would care. The lighting element seems to be 10 stories off the ground floor, so unless your house levitates at night I don’t see how this would affect anyone nearby. As far as the Pepsi sign not beaming light into people’s bedrooms, I would suggest you ask that question of people on the other side of the river. If you are going to set such a low standard I would say that the Pepsi sign should come down too. Honestly, I wish people would try to keep an open mind.

#20 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

The Pepsi Sign was there first? So that that is the basis for deciding the merits of anything? What was here first? The subtext is that if you weren’t here for __ amount of years who cares what you think. People and things that were here first are no more or less important than the things and people that come second. Sorry.

The light show will increase condo maintenance fees… which is not a good idea in this market. This construction project seems a little doomed actually… very very shabby and cheap building process.

#22 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

is LIC the next Dubai?

#23 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Just curious whether the developers of One Hunters Point and Prism can get on the case of MTA to do something about the constantly idling diesel locomotive across the street. I don’t understand why the MTA must park the annoying train in that location when there are other places on that line farther away from residences.

#24 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

At this point in construction how does one tell if a building is shabby and cheap?

#25 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

I like it.

#26 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Why do you people care what’s going on or up in the neigborhood- you obviously never get out from inside- in front of your computer…

#27 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

27, as opposed to you of course, who isn’t in front of your computer? What a wally.

#28 Anonymous / 1 month, 3 weeks ago

This building is going to be beautiful! Instead of changing colors all the time, I think it should team up with the empire state building and match the colors. Long Island City has always been interesting and beautiful… and will continue to be.

#29 Anonymous / 1 month, 2 weeks ago

Whoever wrote: “I hope this economy kills this project!” - #9 Anti
I hope this economy leaves your bitter-ass broke and alone! (if you aren’t already). Who wishes for housing projects to crumble… or anything else to crumble in this economy?? What?, so you can keep the hipsters away? It’s not just hipsters moving into LIC! If you want to keep everyone away then go crawl into some hole.

Thank you to those who called out E&I. Not only are they a ripoff and overchange at times, they also sell rotten food! I’ve returned fruit to them on manyoccassions and just this past weekend had to return a moldy loaf of bread. they suck. And Food Cellar sucks too. way overpriced and a bunch of morons walking around as if they just landed from another planet

#31 Boycott e&i / 1 month, 1 week ago

…. as a matter of fact….. all of Long Island City has become a breeding ground for morons walking around as if they just landed from another planet.
