Accidents will happen in Long Island City. And happen.

Car crash at 47th Road & 11th St, Long Island City. – photo by Jesse Winter

liQcity’s roving photographer Jesse Winter was on hand this morning to capture a serious car-hits-truck accident in Long Island City this morning at on 47th Rd at 11th Street. Luckily, this is right around the corner from the Hunters Point fire station, and the firefighters were on hand to help out.

Car accident on Vernon Blvd at 50th St, Long Island City

Incidentally, liQcity was on hand for another car accident yesterday morning at the corner of Vernon Blvd & 50th St, right at the corner of the 108th police precinct. You would think that would be the best spot to have a car accident if you were going to have one… right? Wrong. The 108th’s precinct’s response time to a car accident right out their door was 25 minutes. Maybe try to stick around the fire station.

I’m actually surprised the 108th precinct responded that quickly! You say the accident was yesterday morning? It must’ve been after breakfast and before they start talking about lunch.

Are the firefighters in LIC paid or volunteer?

Also, did you hear about how the first responders to 9/11 are not invited to this year’s memorial, but the politicians are? Any politician worth their salt should give up their seat for a first responder who wants to go. I know LIC lost some people. That’s just not right.

First responders should hold a protest at the memorial. They have more than one reason… http://gothamist.com/2011/08/31/fdny_refutes_study_say_911_is_causi.php

All Firefighters in NYC are paid.

The 108th precinct is probably no worse than most nyc police stations. There is a shortage of police force in the city right now. We’re probably down about 20-25%, which is a lot.

Did they ever catch anyone involved in the car break-ins?

6, I’m sure the 108th is working around the clock on their intensive investigation. Rest assured, they won’t stop until they find the perpetrators!

Ugh. I’ve been here 12 years and that station is absolutely useless. You are better off going to the fire house for help. The developers or politicians need to address that. They are putting so many people at the waterfront, and you all think ‘great, the police are right here. Hahaha. Why do you think the car burglaries went on for so many nights in a row? Because these guys are not serious cops. You go in there with a legit problem and they are irritated that you are disturbing their playtime. Someone needs to do something about that.

How about a large demonstration flooding 50th St. with a specific list of complaints and demands?

#9 anonymous / 8 months, 2 weeks ago

You mean how about a large number of arrests on 50th St with charges of disturbing the peace and resisting arrest?

What the 108th precint needs to do to stop the car burglaries is to plant a bait car and wait until someone tries to break in, other precints do it. I saw an arrest go down with a bait car in Woodside a few months ago. The van was loaded with new stuff still in the box and the moron car thieves fell for it. Once they broke in, 2 unmarked cars came out of nowhere and 2 cops on foot were chasing the thieves. They got them after a 100 foot chase.

I don’t think the 108 cops know how to run. I’m waiting until the DD opens at the corner. Then we’ll finally see some cops come out of the station.

Love for any of the people complaining about the police to try that job for any length of time. Working nights, weekends, holidays away from your family.

And where were you during 911…running for your lives or were you running *to* the towers to help others?

Think about that yuppies.

Ha! I was in college in upstate NY on 9/11. First thing I did was call the Red Cross to see if they needed my help…they turned me down. Now, do I have a right to complain?

#14 Anonymous / 8 months, 2 weeks ago

No volunteer firefighters on FDNY

#15 Anonymous / 8 months, 2 weeks ago

Woodside is the 108th pct

#13 from what I have read people are only complaining about the 108 and not the whole police department. Please let us know what computer program you use that allows you to id all the poster’s socioeconomic standing. I am sure you could make tons of money with such a program – oh wait, that would turn you into a yuppy…never mind.

13, right. Take out your tiny violins for the dear old cops of the 108th. All they are doing is putting in their time until they can retire to their boats on Long Island.

Obviously, you don’t know much about that precinct. And I’m no yuppie either — just someone who has seen these do-nothings in “action” for many, many years. The only reason the glare of attention is finally on these loads is that there is a critical mass of people in the neighborhood who can keep an eye on them — something they aren’t used to.

#16 Woodside is also covered by the 114th precinct in Astoria. Those guys run after criminals. I think part of the problem in LIC is that for a long time there was not that much to do over here. So the rumor is that they sent people to the 108 who weren’t that great or on the verge of retiring. Now things are changing, but the police protocol hasn’t evolved.

Supposedly the 108 holds community meetings. It might be good for us to find out when the next one is and actually show up and let them know that a lot of people live here now and they need to patrol the streets more.

Then they will just stick around and give us stupid tickets.
