That is not what happened. A car ran the stop sign and struck the car,
you can clearly see the impact of the other car on the driver side door.
There was no cab that stopped short. sorce lic

I also live in the area and agree that much needs to be done for our safety. Hint* Perhaps several speed bumps on the roads.???

I have seen cars and trucks going sooooo fast! A cat recently was killed crossing the street, poor thing!

Should we wait until a person is hurt or killed to do the RIGHT THING???

I live around the corner from Masso and cross this intersection frequently. It's ALWAYS unsafe. Cars are either racing to beat the light at 48th Ave, or the light has just changed and they are racing from it. Factor in double-parked cars and -- even worse -- trucks, and what you get is a recipe for disaster: Fast-moving vehicles with low visibility. I think the main problem is the location; it's right in between the Midtown Tunnel/LIE and the 59th St. Bridge. Vehicles passing through this area are driven as if they're still on a major thoroughfare, not a quiet residential street. Come to think of it, almost all of the streets in Hunter's Point are dangerous for this reason.

I agree with the Astoria Park idea and speed bumps. Gantry Park in the summer will surpass Astoria Park in terms of crowds, especially with the WTB and PS1 masses in the summer. Let's hope we can fix this before someone gets killed first. What's easier to prevent cancer or to cure it?

How about at least a stoplight at that intersection. It's so dangerous in general with just the stop sign.

In astoria park, after countless kids were killed by speeding guidos in cars and motorcycles, speed bumps were put around the park and other residential blocks. Residents were able to get this accomplished by emailing their local politicians and the city and making a little noise. Typically when the city paves the bumps, they also add the words "speed bump" in big bold yellow letters. (Check out the park and see what I mean by BIG, like huge) Should a driver not be paying attention and wind up with damage to their vehicle, it would be their own fault. Speed bumps are a fantastic idea.

Speed bumps would be great, but all of the people on their cell phones won't see them.

Really scary--I passed there 5 minutes after it happened, walking home from work like I do every day. Five minutes earlier I would have been standing right there. It's a miracle no pedestrian was killed.

Regretably, it seems like every street in LIC are "high-speed arter(ies)" and no-stop arteries, too.

Ouch! I've often worried about the high-speed traffic on Vernon and wondered why it's intersections are not all 4-way stop signs, given that a high-speed artery is just one block away on 11th... But now I'm thinking pedestrian mall! :)
