Dutch Kills bar brings the classic cocktail to Long Island City

Dutch Kills, 27-24 Jackson Ave, Long Island City, (718) 383-2724 –photo
First of all, it’s not a $15 cocktail. Proprietor Richard Boccato is very clear about that. Drink prices at the impending Dutch Kills bar, will range from $6-$12ish and include beer (on tap & bottled), wine, signature cocktails, and top shelf sippers. The main focus here though, is on the classic cocktail. You can munch on the artisanal vittles of Sage General Store listening to some live music, while marinating in the sultry atmosphere with its deep dark walls and dangling crystal chandeliers.
You can also steep in a little LIC history:
“The name of the bar is the same as the ancestral name of the neighborhood where it is located (Dutch Kills), which was one of several small enclaves that unified in 1870 to become Long Island City. The word “kills” means “creek” in Dutch, whose settlers arrived in the area in 1643. Originally named “Canapaukah” (loosely translated as “bear’s watering hole”) by the Canarsee indians who were the first occupants of the land in and around what is now Long Island City, the “creek” in question is the Newtown Creek, which runs behind the bar dividing Long Island City from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Dutch Kills was an important road hub during the Revolutionary War, and the site of a British Army garrison from 1776 to 1783.”
Currently slated to open by the end of February, and by the looks of things, it’s definitely a strong possibility.
Looks great!! Glad to hear it won’t be so blindingly expensive.
No flat screen televisions? What’s a bar without TV’s?
Another overpriced bar in LIC. Great.
How about a place with a singles scene instead of all these hipster doofus hang-outs?
#3 just stick to lucky mojos. #4, this is the first bar in LIC that actually has a chance of having a good singles scene.
Very cool bar. No TV needed, people will have to actually talk to each other.
Ugh, what is this Europe will all the trash sitting around talking politics! This is American, put some damn TVs in the place and offer pub food at a decent price.
And if this place ever gets a cover charge it’ll be emptier than a LIC open house.
This is not America, it’s NYC.
Ugh #7 how boring. Do you have no imagination? We have a zillion of those “American” bars where you watch TV while you scarf greasy fried food. Yuck.
Well, I guess I can buy two cocktails and THEN it will be 15 dollars.
LIQCity trumped by Gothamist in her own ‘hood. Wow.
“How about a place with a singles scene instead of all these hipster doofus hang-outs?”
Dude there are no good ‘hipster’ bars in LIC. LIC Bar and Dominies should be, but the patrons are total New Jerseyesque ‘singles’ and couples. They even got rid of the photobooth at LIC.
Stay away… this place is far enough from Vernon that it has the potential to actually attract cool people and have a good environment.
Also, I still don’t think this bar is in Dutch Kills. Does the Greater Astoria Historical Society or someone who actually knows the subneighborhood boundaries want to weigh-in? I thought Dutch Kills was considered north of Queens Plaza and this is still Hunters Point.
“Ugh, what is this Europe will all the trash sitting around talking politics! This is American, put some damn TVs in the place and offer pub food at a decent price”
Go to the Shannon Pot.
What is this “television” you all speak of? Is it similar to Mr. Edison’s Kinetoscope? I do so love watching those moving pictures.
It’s not Dutch Kills at all. It’s near Dutch Kills St and that’s it, but this is bonafide Hunters Point. The bar looks great and all, I will definitely go check it out, but I don’t like that they called it Dutch Kills. There is a neighborhood already called that, and it’s confusing. They didn’t come up with the name. And it’s not even in DK. However, I like that it’s not another generic pub and that there’s a lot of thought put into the concept….even if I disagree with some of it.
The funny thing is that this bar is opening in the worst time in LIC in a long time and it will totally succeed…. wish I could say the same about some of the junk on Vernon Blvd.
I think its a good name in theory, and named after the street it is by, but they should not go around spreading the story that it is in the Dutch Kills neighborhood. It is somewhat near the Dutch Kill/Kills canal off Newtown Creek, though. (across the LIRR)
They named it b/c the street is around the corner.
Better than Dominies Hoek, which is about 12 blocks from where Dominies Hoek was, which was the little slice of land near the mouth of Newtown Creek.
Who cares about the name? This joint is in a family of amazing bars. It’s going to be great whatever it’s called, and it’s getting LIC a lot of positive attention. What was the last thing gothamist came out to LIC to cover?
Instead of complaining, just don’t patronize it. Let the rest of us enjoy our cocktails.
lol @ “cool people”
We haven’t had a cool person in New York City since the early 1980s.
YES! I am so psyched. Now I can get a decent cocktail w/out taking the train for at least 30 min. All you naysayers stay home. More for me!!
What does #15 mean by “junk on Vernon”? I count Domaine, Dominie’s, Lounge 47 and LIC Bar as some of the most pleasant watering holes in the ‘hood.
“Domaine, Dominie’s, Lounge 47 and LIC Bar”
Cheesy. Even LIC Bar and Dominie’s, which shouldn’t be cheesy, are because of the clientele.
Weren’t Dominie’s and LIC Bar once trying to get dirty hipsters to come there by having that filthy Michigan guy try and book bands there that no one cared about?
I think that was the Creek and the Cave.
# 25, yes. When the LIC Bar first opened it was a really great place to go, have drinks and actually have a conversation with your friends. Then a new owner took over and it has changed, not necessarily for the better. In the summer there used to be great local bands that played on sunday afternoons along with a BBQ and the place was usually pretty packed. Then the person who did it moved out of town. She was supposed to do it last summer and had lined up bands but the owner screwed her and decided to hire someone else to do it, I believe the “filthy Michigan guy” and all the good bands that had played there in the past refused to play there. Since I did not attend any of the bands this past summer I don’t know how that went but what I heard about it wasn’t good. The great thing about the bar was that here was no TV but now there is one. Unfortunately the owner wants it to be the next IT bar instead of a local bar that locals want to go to, especially thise of us who are older, have money but don’t want to be bothered by the stupid kids are just want to get drunk.
“filthy Michigan guy”? Is that really necessary? I think those comments should be removed. I know who they are talking about and that is just not right.
i agree. this guy’s comments are annoying and hateful. makes reading this blog much less enjoyable.
Dude, it’s cool, I showered.
Hey jerk-store, that’s my roomy! My room’s way messier. Maybe cuz I’m from northern MI?
Kevin, do the dishes.
Heh.
top shelve strippers? sweeeeet!
Any truth to the rumor that some cop is going to reopen a newly renovated McReilly’s?
this is a very great idea. i hope to visit this place soon. i also hope that the prices of their drinks are worth of the price that they charge. i am very particular with drinks and i think i will be satisfied with their drinks.
As the month ends, any word on whether they are serving drinks yet?
Finally we will have a bar in Astoria with no trashy Europeans or unsophisticated idiots from Middle America who can’t go on living without their television sets or bad pub food.
Finally!
