Long Island City’s retail unleashing a bounty this Spring

The retail glut that was plaguing Vernon/Jackson this winter, seems to rebounding with a vengeance. Happy Cinco de Mayo.

Newly Open

  • A new hair salon called New York Looks has opened in the old Purple Pumpkin space. Specializing in coloring, wet/dry cuts, mani/pedis & full-service waxing. 47-14 Vernon Blvd, Vernon/Jackson, LIC, 718.784.3857

  • Dutch Kills Bar is open! Experience the classic cocktail, painstakingly recreated in our hood. 27-24 Jackson Ave, Court Sq, LIC

Impending

  • Matted LIC, a custom framing & gift shop, is opening in the old Casa Vizcaya sales office. The store will feature an art gallery, a large selection of frames, handcrafted gifts, home furnishing and personal accessories. The owners are bringing their experience of 37 years in business as Frame Art Gallery in Fresh Meadows, Queens. The store will be accepting portfolios from local artists to display in the gallery. More info coming soon. The store should be open with in a couple of weeks. 46-36 Vernon Blvd, Vernon/Jackson, LIC

  • It’s official, LIC is going to the dogs. Some kind of Doggy Day Spa/pet store is rumored to be coming to the 2500 SF retail space in the bottom of Avalon Riverview North 4-75 48th Ave, Queenswest, LIC

  • Also a rumor: a new, fancy Italian furniture store is slated to arrive in the ground floor retail space at 10-50 Jackson Ave.

  • In the space next to Ethereal Boutique is manifesting an American/Latin bistro. Projected to open in the early fall. 47-38 Vernon Blvd, LIC

  • Old, old Next Level Floral space at 47-30 Vernon Blvd is still manifesting some kind of mystery restaurant, still sort of rumored to be Italian. (Super-Rumor)

  • There’s a new pub still brewing in the old McReily’s space. Burgers, fries, beer…you know, a pub.

  • Ihawan is scheduled to pop next week. We’ll keep you updated.

Not Happening

  • Supposedly, Dunkin Donuts is no longer coming to Ten63 Jackson. It seems the residents opposed the national chain tenant, and apparently the developer listened. No donuts for LIC.

Closing Doors

  • We’ll do a dedicated post about this, but just to get the word out… Art-O-Mat will be sadly closing its doors at the end of this month.

“ARTOMAT TO SAY GOODBYE?? — As some are now aware, we have made the difficult decision to wind ARTOMAT down and close its doors. We have had an amazing run and we are grateful for the incredible support all of you have given just by being there. We are especially indebted to our dedicated volunteers. We have had support and enthusiasm from the family owners of Plaxall the likes of which we have not seen anywhere else. And most important we feel we have shown the need in this community for the type of space ARTOMAT has been.”

“Doggy Day Spa”???

And since when do people living above a retail space get to dictate what opens there? National chains are the only type of tenants that can afford rents in new luxury construction

There’s a Dunkin’ Donuts at Queensboro Plaza.

Art-O-Mat will be a real loss in the community. It was uniquely LIC.

Sad to see Art-O-Mat go.

I echo No. 4. What a shame that it’s places like Art-O-Mat that get turfed out and not some other dumpy businesses that are a blot on Vernon.

Well did they get ‘turfed out’ or did they just not make money? Didn’t Plaxall give them the place rent-free?

I want to like Art-O-Mat, but it always just felt awkward/uncoordinated in there. Kind of a random mish-mash of things. Only place to buy Queens-oriented items, though.

I don’t think they got turfed out. I just think they ran out of volunteer mojo and needed to get on with their lives.

#1, it depends on the by-laws of a building. If they give the owners a right, then they can exercise it. Plus, there are two coffee shops on the same block (sweatleaf and Brasil). I personally am quite happy to see that Dunkin Donuts will not be coming to the area.

Plus, that building is one of the few that actually looks decent, the candy cane Dunkin awnings would not be the greatest addition.

I will miss Art-O-Mat. I always bought Queens stuff there. Where else will we be able to buy such stuff???

Dunkin donuts is a yawn. I think LIC needs some more creative ventures…. otherwise we really will become like Hoboken.

Wow a neighborhood full of professionals who work hard. Who would want to be like them?

#12 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

12, you want LIC to be filled with drunken, date-raping former frat boys who “work hard” (i.e., take government handouts for fiddling around on computer screens)?

LOL @ #13

#15 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

Yea! No Dunkin Donuts!

#16 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

There’s a already one here and more will come when the economy improves.

#17 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

Any idea who is opening in the old McReilly’s space? We know a pub, but are the new owners new to the restaurant scene, ex-pats from Manhattan or…?

#18 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

17, is that a threat or promise? In the meantime, good for the people in that building.

#19 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

The new owners for the Mcreiily’s space have a pub in Queens already. The food is not bad…..but the noise level is deafening. And too many TV’s.

I keep hearing that Padrick and Noreen are on their way back. Hooray if that is indeed true!

My hats to the residents of 10-63. You have endeared yourselves in my vision of maintaining the character of LIC . A Dunkin Donuts would be the beginning of the end.

Yeah to NO DUNKIN DONUTS. BOO to BCH closing. I heard the landord raised the rent.

WOW what bunch of low life money grubbers (if that is true)
