Mysteriously stalled Filipino BBQ joint ‘Ihawan’ to finally open in LIC?

Ihawan 2 getting ready to open in Long Island City

Filipino BBQ & Sushi at ‘Ihawan’ to open soon, Long Island City

For over a year now, the stalled restaurant-to-be, Ihawan, has sat vacant and forlorn on 50th Ave right across from Cafe Henri. There have been all sorts of rumors as to why… something about the C of O not legally permitting a kitchen. Let’s just say, there were probably lots of lawyers and tears involved to get a restaurant to the finish line and not be able to cross it for one year and almost 4 months.

Well whatever the conflict is, it seems to be resolved now, because a flurry of activity has been witnessed at the restaurant site, and a new website has emerged, calling the restaurant ‘Ihawan 2′, after the original and popular Ihawan (1) in Woodside, which is classified as Filipino BBQ. Of course, since this is Long Island City, Ihawan 2 is going fuse the cuisine with Sushi.

No judgements! It could be good. And there’s some room for sushi again since Lucky Mojo stopped serving it entirely. At least Filipino food is an original offering for LIC. Though we are on stand-by for news of an Italian brick-oven pizza/sushi joint for Hunters Point.

PS. They’re hiring.

BANY is right around the corner. Their sushi is ok though. Good, but overpriced. Bet they’ve been happy this restaurant hasn’t opened yet.

I really the food like BANY. I liked their prices even more when they were BYOB but I wouldn’t consider them overpriced. They’re a lot busier since they got their wine & beer licence, or maybe it’s since people moved in to some of the buildings nearby. Anyway, delighted to see a new cuisine on the horizon at Ihawan 2.

#2 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I like BANY too. But Ihawan 2 looks like it has a great menu! Should be a nice alternative to the crappy bbq at Unlucky Mojos.

#3 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Lucky Mojos is not getting rid of their sushi, as was reported on this site.

#4 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Ihawan has a great reputation for excellent Filipino cuisine—–but they do not need to add Sushi to their menu. Remember when everyone was begging for Sushi in Hunters Point? Enough already with Sushi. This might be one of those cases of “Be careful what you wish for”. Now is the time to start begging for a great noodle bar with pork rolls etc a la Chang and the Korean gang…crispy pork belly anyone? yumyum!

#5 anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

That’s interesting #4, because I contacted them directly and that’s what they said too. Maybe they changed their mind after all the complaining.

#6 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I heard that they were going to stop serving sushi… maybe they never stopped…

#7 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I would love some good Korean.

#8 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Exactly what LIC needs… yet another mediocre sushi “fusion” joint. *puke*

#9 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I second #8!!!

#10 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

YAY!!! we will be heading there for some pancit and halo halo as soon as it opens!!!

#11 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Can we get a fast food joint around here? A Taco Bell or a McDonalds would be great.

#12 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I’ve been to Lucky Mojo’s twice in the past few weeks and they don’t have sushi anymore. They just reprinted their menu, sans sushi.

How about some Vietnamese food?

#13 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

#12 i agree how about a chipotle!!! and a Jamba Juice to enjoy on a hot summer day by the water front.

#14 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Orange Julius.

#15 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I have to admit, I too like a nice cold Orange Julius on a summer day. It’s like drinking an orange creamsicle. I heard Rustica might start doing gelato-shakes in the summer. Can’t wait! Can’t wait for Filipino food either, it’s something you don’t find everywhere.

#16 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

There are a lot of Filipinos in the ‘hood… has anyone ever gone to that Filipino grocery store at 21 St and 45 Rd? (across the street from the Filipino church)

#17 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Me quiero Taco Bell.

#18 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

McDonald’s? Taco Bell? Jamba Juice? Are you frakkin’ serious? Please go back to whatever strip-mall choked surburb from when you spawned. Ugh. These soul-less MDCs have played a huge part in strangling my native Manhattan, and you want them springing up like so many corporate weeds in an actually decent part of Queens? Um, no thanks.

#19 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I second Vietnamese!
(excited about Filipino too just not with sushi)

#20 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

19, what did you expect? You flood the area with boring drones from Anywhere USA, this is what they want. Having said that, I also don’t agree that LIC needs to offer every single goddamn ethnic cuisine on the planet. LIC is starting to look more and more like some Asian Bladerunner nightmare of the new millennium. Get me the hell out of here.

#21 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Every ethnic cuisine on the planet? No. But something other than yet another Italian restaurant or sushi-fusion joint would be most appreciated. Hell, just give me back my McReilly’s $8 bangers and mash, big enough for two on a hungover weekend morning/afternoon. Please!

Or cull the Italian restaurant deadwood – I’m looking at you, Masso! – and give us something better instead.

#22 #19 / 2 years, 10 months ago

Though kudos to you, #21, for making me spittake on my keyboard with your line:

“LIC is starting to look more and more like some Asian Bladerunner nightmare of the new millennium.”

Oh so funny because it’s oh so sadly true. Sigh.

#23 #19 / 2 years, 10 months ago

LIC was more Bladerunnerish when the Japanese metal band used to practice in the basement under 10-63. Now the hood is more “Truman Show” than “Bladerunner.”

#24 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

You’re scaring me, #24! Who in the hood is Truman? Worse still, where are the cameras, besides in the bars?

#25 #19 / 2 years, 10 months ago

#22, there is another Italian coming, LIQcity said, on Vernon. I think it’s across the street from Masso anyway. I find Masso to be hit/miss. Sometimes it’s good, other times… could be better.

#26 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I finally went to Manducatis the other week. It may have been the raddest restaurant I’ve ever been to.

Da Gianni is solid, but nothing to write home about.

I went to Masso for brunch once… kinda crappy service (and they weren’t even busy) plus awful music playing.

Still need to do Manetta’s.

Is Junior’s pizza really the best in town, can anyone confirm?

#27 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Oh yeah, and how is Cassino?

Someone ordered pizza from Bella Via once. It was good. Didn’t seem that “Italian” and probably cost a lot though.

#28 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Anyone know what happened to Fast & Delicious? I used to order from them all the time, but no one has answered the phone in months. I miss the simple combo of grilled chicken, vegetables and beans.

#29 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Da Gianni closed down the the business is for sale.

Masso isn’t Italian. The owners are Irish, I think.

Manducatis is so over-rated, it isn’t funny. Horrible service. Barely edible food.

Cassino is okay. Sorry to see they ripped down that beautiful tree they had in the back.

And yeah, enough with the Asian fusion. Why not Italian fusion?

#30 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

#29, maybe a horrible name?

#31 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

That has to be the worst name ever.

#32 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Lucky Mojos sucks no matter what they do! Bad food!

#33 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

#21 I suppose you have never gone to a fast food joint in your entire life you hypocrite.

#34 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Do you guys need to be such assholes? Do you know how hard it is to put together even a bad restaurant? At least let’s show some respect for business owners in LIC trying to bring the people something at least. For pete’s sake we hardly have anything! Lucky Mojo is run by great people… if you don’t like something there, try to give them some constructive feedback instead of just anonymously bashing them on the blog.

#35 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

35, OK. here’s some constructive feedback for Lucky Mojo’s: you serve perhaps the worst BBQ I’ve ever had in my life. Happy?

#36 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I’ve eaten at Manducatis. When we walked in we were underwhelmed with the decor. The service was slow too. But I can honestly say it was one of the best Italian meals I’ve ever had. Everything was truly delicious. It seems like the orders are cooked from scratch which is probably why service is slow. For one appetizer, 2 mains, 3 glasses of wine and tip we paid $100. And it was worth every penny. The portions were on the large side by the way.

I agree with #35. Give local businesses a chance. People seem to spend a lot of time moaning about what we don’t have and not supporting what we do have.

#37 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

37, Lucky Mojo’s (and its earlier incarnation) have had YEARS to work out their kinks. They had their chance. It’s just a fact that some restaurants deserve to fail because they don’t listen to their customers, don’t offer good food, or have lousy service. There are places in LIC I love, and others (including a few mentioned on this thread) I don’t. I’m not going to keep throwing away my money on places that I don’t like. I can think of plenty of other charities I can support — mediocre LIC restaurants aren’t among them

#38 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

38, This is 37 again. Fair enough, you’ve tried them out and are not going to waste your money going back. My comment was more towards the folks who keep asking for more/other types of businesses but don’t try the ones we have.

#39 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

“Da Gianni closed down the the business is for sale.”

When? I ate there like 3 weeks ago!

#40 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Frank Bruni (NYTimes Food Critic) ranks Manducatis as one his favorite resturants for authentic “home-style” Italian cooking. I also have always enjoyed my meals there. Bella Via’s coal fired thin crust Pizza is very Italian. It is very much like the type of pizza that I used to eat in Firenze during the many trips to that city that I made “back in the day” when I worked in the fashion industry.

#41 anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

#30 – I don’t know where you get your info, but DaGiannis is NOT closed. I just called and spoke to Gianni. They are very much open as usual.

#42 anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Boo Lucky Mojos…time fore something new in that space…even though it seems that no matter what you put there, it’s a bust…anyone remember when it was Smokey’s? I think that space is cursed.

#43 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I must disagree I like Lucky Mojos’ food and many of the people I have taken there for dinner sgree. Too bad they stoped serving Sushi because it was pretty good.

#44 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

some people just don’t have taste buds I guess…

#45 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Has anyone been to WunderBar yet?

#46 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

21, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

#47 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

#46, I was at Wunderbar last weekend. The location is truly godawful, but they really give the German theme their all (complete with German pop music). Unfortunately, there’s no beer garden there–no outdoor seating, etc. It’s just a little restaurant with crappy food and a tiny bar in a terrible location. There is a good beer selection, and it’s pretty cheap, but there is no way Wunderbar is going to make it for more than a few months.

#48 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I think its a cool location. Ravenswood has all the European restaurants… Bulgara and Ion’s seem to do fine over there. I’m sure the rent is cheap, too… between people in Ravenswood, Roosevelt Island, and SW Astoria there are folks in the area… a real easy bike ride from Hunters Point, too.

#49 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

so many tangents on this blog…hilarious!

#50 Anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Yes, they do digress. I’m still waiting for #30 to tell me why he reported a false rumor re: diGiannis. It’s a very popular destination. That’s what prompted me to call them to find out if the story bore any truth — which thankfully it did not!

#51 anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

Something seems to be up with Da Gianni’s.
