New restaurant ‘Sushi Siam’ opening on Vernon; General biz buzz

The new Japanese/Thai fusion restaurant that’s been brewing at the corner of 48th Ave & Vernon (the old 5SL sales office) has some signage action. Sushi Siam will soft open sometime in the middle of November. According to the new owners, the restaurant will feature a full Thai menu, along with Sushi and traditional Japanese offerings.
The storefront right next door is also undergoing a transformation into a dentist’s office. Actually, that whole block on Vernon between 48th Ave & 47th Road has a lot going on in general. Spa Disilva may or may not be back on track after their prolonged stop work order. It’s hard to tell.

Modern Spaces realty, Vernon Blvd, Long Island City
Modern Spaces, has blossomed further as a realty, and the mysterious Figaro still remains closed and silent. Except for the site now features some more Nestseekers signage:

Up the block on 50th Ave, it seems that Ihawan is having some trouble with their C of O, and the mostly finished restaurant is still stalled. Someone in that story is definitely not happy.
Don’t Restaurant owners review the restaurant landscape in neighborhoods anymore?? LIC/Hunters Point already has at least 5 different asian or sushi restaurants (Shi, Tuk Tuk, Lucky Mojo, Bany, the perpetually under construction asian place across from Cafe Henri), not to mention the long list of cheap-o chinese places that stuff up my doormat with their menus.
It’s like the new gold seal of gentrification is an overcrowded asian-restaurant market.
Seriously… someone please figure out that a non-asian restaurant in LIC is a smart business plan!
Long Island Sushi City
now only if i could find somewhere to get brick oven pizza….
That’s very true #1. Real fusion is a particular cuisine blended with flavors of another – such as French with Asian undertones or vice versa. Sushi and Thai are not blends. They are simply 2 separate cuisines being served under one roof. It seems that every restaurant opening in LIC throws in a sushi menu no matter what their cuisine is.
#4 – Try Manettas or Manducattis Rustica (good but too small)
That its a shame that McReilly’s has closed down
I love sushi (a LOT) , but even I draw the line here. Enough is enough with the gentrfied neighborhood = sushi/fusion thing. Bleeccchhh. Boooorrrring….Give us food….
This looks boring. I doubt it will last. Anyone notice how empty Blend is?
Anyone hear about how McReilly’s are doing with finding a new location?
#1 Well said.
#8 We avoided eating at Blend because they don’t have a liquor license yet. Last week we decided to give it a try and it was great. I’d definitely recommend it.
I agree about the overkill on the sushi thing… enough already. I know it’s been said before but how about mexican? Anyone?
Re: Modern Spaces- what is with that hideously bright light they have blasting over their storefront at night? It’s horrible, ugly and gives the area a very cheap feel.
@ #10 … there is Mexican, and pretty damn good too, at The Cave on Jackson/Pulaski
there is need for a good Indian Restaurant and even a great Peruvian or some Eastern European joint … something with “real” food as someone else already said.
Has anyone looked around to see who is moving to LIC? It’s Asians, so their restaurants follow. Flushing is ‘flushing’ into LIC.
#12:
Indian = 5 Star Punjabi
Eastern European = Ion’s, Bulgara
Jeez.
Here’s my general take on new establishments here… they are always, like… sort of… lame? cheesy? un-self-aware? I don’t know, almost every new establishment has some really bad vibe, one that you don’t get from most of the new places opening, in, say, Brooklyn. They are both gentrification, but why is LIC’s so much more awkward? Almost everything new that opens here seems to have some ridiculously dorky name or concept or decor.
#2 I couldn’t agree more!
#10 The Cave = yuck, but drinks are ok!
Now that McReilly’s is gone, we need to replace the burgers – A great burger place would be great.
15, it’s the fakeness of our Asian restaurants that gets me. Sushi, sushi everywhere, but not an authentic Japanese restaurant among them. It’s like the sushi you’d get at a food court in a suburban mall.
I think you sense the “awkwardness” in the restaurants because of the rushed way in which LIC has developed. The neighborhoods with the best restaurants have a core ethnic group that live and work in the area, and so they create food for themselves.
13, Are you kidding me? I would kill to have one of the Flushing-style Chinese restaurants in LIC. Now that’s “real” Asian food. (Tuk Tuk, by the way, is the best of our bunch.)
I hope they dont cut into Tuk Tuk’s business. They are my favorite LIC joint. I think I’m an addict really. I seem to go there a couple of times a week and have been for 2 years :-p
Maybe someone could open a basic burger joint to fill the void McReilly’s closing has left.
In the case of McReilly’s, there may be such a thing as an unfillable void.
Tis true, townie – a regular “burger joint” could never replace McReillys! It was way more than just “burgers”. It was the ambiance, the camaraderie, the full menu of enjoyable food at reasonable prices – and a place “where everybody knows your name”…a real neighborhood Irish Pub. Has anyone heard from Noreen and Pat?
I’m a vegetarian, but supposedly Brooks 1890 has awesome burgers.
Dominies Hoek has awesome veggie burgers.
Brooks is horribly overpriced and caters to the CitiCorp crowd, meaning they’re never open.
Dominies Hoek is overpriced too and they run out of food all the time.
Wow, a hipster who’s a vegetarian, what a cliche! Let me guess, you’re from the Midwest too.
I’m looking forward to the restaurants that move into the built-out spaces of Sushi Siam, BANY, etc., once they close. They are poor concepts that won’t recoup the build-out expenses for their owners, but will save the next tenants the cost of major renovation and give them a leg-up on success out of the gate. The free market is cruel- if the places aren’t good and/or don’t appeal to customers, they won’t survive. But the beautiful thing is that the failure of one is often the fertilizer for the success of the next.
Lets hope that, in the spirit of places like Lucky Mojos and Masso, the next generation in those spaces gets it right.
jb, that is a very good point. If the sushi is no good then they will fail. This is why I am not upset that we have so much sushi selection in the neighborhood because it will create a competitive environment. The best sushi will get all the business and the bad sushi will have to pack their bags. Let the sushi competition begin.
I have to agree with #11- Modern Spaces is a blight on Vernon Blvd, that light is an eyesore.
Also- why does the coffee at both Communitea and Brasil suck? Bitter beyond words.
I hate ragging on new business but I must agree that Modern Spaces’ awning is pretty cheesy.
I like Brasil’s coffee. Just be sure to get the Brazilian, not the American… it makes a good cafe au lait.
There is a (cheesy looking) espresso bar called Caffeina(?) ready to open shortly on 23rd St…
If you’re looking for a good burger and a beer at a decent price, look no further than Jackson Ave Steakhouse. The place is nice and when I go fairly empty. Burger and beer is $8.
I feel sorry for #24, always so grumpy.
Not too excited for Sushi Siam. But more options are always better I suppose. I agree with #30 about Jackson Ave. Great deal for a good burger and a draft. Unpretentious spot with friendly bartenders too.
At night the light of Modern Spaces on the block is kind of nice, though it does kind of feel like a 7-11. I like how the kept the exposed brick.
The light has grown on me. At first, I thought it was just awful and now, for some reason, i enjoy it. They have a nice color scheme and the office is really nice looking. The awning/light is different but it’s cool in a different kind of way. I think the awnings on Vernon need to be spruced up a bit also. There are some really horrendous ones out there.
not a fan of Dominees
#25, I agree, I am looking forward to the second generation of restaurants in those spaces.
we need more restaurants like Malagueta (36th ave and Crescent). It’s Brazilian but would love Peruvian, Vietnamese, Healthy American but no more of this “fusion” – we have too many restaurants that have added mediocre sushi to menus just to try to cover all it’s bases.
Sweetleaf (on Jackson between 48th and 49th) has the best coffee of the bunch. Top-notch. And they’re super nice in there.
Yeah, we could use a good Chinese place and a good Vietnamese place. I’d love some banh mi.
It seems like many people already decided that Sushi Siam will not have good sushi even though it has not even opened. I guess we have a lot of psychics in LIC.
Sweetleaf is awesome…amazing coffee and tea and a really great staff…everyone should get their coffee there!!
it’s so weird, LIC went from having no place to get sushi, to way too many sushi places, I think people had the same ideas at the same time. Maybe Sushi Siam will get it right, because the others are no good.
40, I don’t trust non-Japanese places to serve good sushi. It’s like buying a pastrami sandwich at a Greek diner — they suck.
You’re probably right #41…but I can hope.
#27 – Cafe Henri has one of the best cups of coffee in the neighborhood. (even though it is a restaurant/cafe you don’t have to sit down to get a cup) Regular coffee is good, but their Cafe au lait are pretty awesome.
You can definitely take Cafe Henri’s coffee to go.
“Modern Spaces” fluorescent awning is the biggest eyesore on Vernon Jackson Blvd. Its should be destroyed.
“Modern Spaces” fluorescent awning is the biggest eyesore on Vernon Jackson Blvd. Its should be destroyed.”
agreed! is it even legal? aren’t there guidelines?
Calling for the vandalism of a local LIC business is absolutely not permitted on liQcity.
Please do not continue that line of conversation. Thank you.
A little bit bright but I like the awning. Calling for it to be destroyed is definitely not the spirit of this neighborhood.
47 and 48, I think it was just hyperbole. I really don’t think some one on this board really meant to instigate vandalism. Maybe the owners of the space should think about who the real vandals are with that hideos awning.
Maybe someone should leave a thinly-veiled and very passive-aggressive anonymous note on their door about it. Extra points if you write with a collective “we” voice rather than an individual one.
;)
I think the sign undermines the clean and modern look that they’ve created for the interior space, but that’s their choice- there are far more egregious aesthetic violations in LIC than that one.
Of all the injustices to get angry anarcho-punk about, a slightly tacky sign for an otherwise well-designed business space is one of the last I would choose to take issue with.
Lucky Mojo’s sign takes the cake for most obnoxious, bar none.
I don’t agree with saying the sign should be destroyed. That’s not right. That being said though, it’s such an inappropriate sign for the block. They should have more respect for the neighbors, especially since they claim to be a neighborhood realtor. I live around the corner, and I’m usually blinded by the sign at night… especially late at night. Maybe they can turn it off earlier? There’s enough lights on Vernon.
and while we’re knocking things on vernon blvd- whats up with that korean deli (E&I?) by the 7 train. Bad enough that everything is way overpriced, but I am shocked by how rude and nasty the employees are. And they are always so busy- hy put up with such stank additudes? Terrible.
Hello All,
We appreciate everyone’s feedback about the awning and the store in general. We have received many words of encouragement since our inception and truly want to be a part of the community and are sorry for any of our neighbors that have been disturbed by the light. We will set our timers to turn the awning light off much earlier and sincerely apologize for the annoyance it may have caused.
Why can’t any of the hipster coffee places pour milk or cream into your coffee for you? Why can’t any of them leave room for milk or cream when you ask them to? Why can’t any of them keep the milk & cream area reasonably fresh and clean? Why can’t any of them make coffee that is not bitter?
Just wondering. The old Chock Full of Nuts chain had it right.
^^ chock full o’ nuts
“Hipster” coffeehouses in this neighborhood? LOL
Everyone is so angry here. Why?
I agree #58!
The Cave has always had issues with mice and roaches. Eat there at your peril.
Because Angry is the new black
Checked out Sushi Siam yesterday. My grand entrance is greeted by a friendly Chinese lady. Given the fact that this place is owned by non-Japanese, I didn’t order any raw fish. Went with the Pad-Thai instead…bad mistake. It’s just rice noodle stir-fried in ketchup and sugar. I had the waitress bagged it up and gave it to a homeless in the city. This fusion concept is so 90′s.
Great restaurant!

The term “fusion” has been consistently misused by restaurants, including a few in LIC. Just because a place serves sushi and some Thai dishes does not make it a fusion restaurant — it’s just a restaurant that can’t figure out what kind of food to serve. A real fusion restaurant blends the flavors and ingredients of different cuisines into its dishes in an inventive way.
