Restaurant openings in Hunters Point: BANY’s open, and SHI’s on the way

BANY Ten57 open on Jackson Ave
Here’s a few updates on the emerging restaurant scene in Hunters Point:
What’s open now: BANY Ten57 is open for business and the queenswest.com message board has some community reviews. Word on the street so far is ho hum.
On the Horizon: Thanks to multiple tipsters, liQcity has learned of a new restaurant opening at Rockrose, 4720 Center Blvd, called SHI, slated to open May 2008. Straight from the owners:
“Spearheaded by a pair of brothers who have been providing the United Nations and its community with quality Chinese food for the past 18 years, SHI will mix old-world, Asian tradition with modern stylings, both in food and décor. It will occupy the 4,100-square-foot space in the ground floor of the East Coast 6 building and include a bar, lounge, sushi bar, outdoor seating and VIP area, punctuated by an upscale design and spectacular views of Manhattan. SHI will feature contemporary cuisine that will borrow heavily from traditional recipes, plus the bar will showcase specialty drinks with an Asian flair. We look forward to becoming a part of the LIC community!”

Go to Blend(they’re between Communitea and Lounge 47). They serve Latin fusion cuisine. I ate there a couple of weeks ago. Surprisingly good. I had their seafood ceviche and yucca fries. If you want tostones or mofongo, it’s available in LIC.
A VIP area in a Chinese restaurant? Please.
Why not? It’s nice to see a fancy, upscale place coming in.
Tex MEx? what about lucky mojo’s?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have the addition, it would just be nice if everything wasn’t and Asian themed.
I’m still having a hard time figuring out Lucky Mojo. Stickes me as the type of place trying to do too much. What is it? Japan? BBQ? Tex Mex? Menu is all over the place and everything is mediocre. Would be better to focus on one thing and do it well than try to be all things to all people. Blend is not Tex Mex, its pure Latin.
I’m a bit surprised that nobody has added a ‘T’ to the “Eat SHI” sign.
I happened to meet the brothers when I was coming home from work since I live in the building– at first i was skeptical of another asian/fusion place, but it looks pretty cool, they gave me a tour of the ongoing construction inside. nice guys. I don’t know much about construction but the layout seems nice so far.
If SHI is like an Ono in the Gansevoort Hotel, that would be a cool addition to the neighborhood.
Be careful if you eat at that place. In Japanese, “ono” means hatchet or ax. “Shi,” among other definitions, means death.
WTF is with all these baffling acronymns? BANY? SHI? Not that Lucky Mojo is any better. or Blend. Blagh.
Hey Brandon. Maybe like me, you are not from New York. At first I found the multitude of baffling acronyms annoying, but now they are just amusing. LIQCity is one of my personal faves….
[...] Fast forward to March. Some movement proffered hope. The restaurant space on the first floor - revealed as an unfortunately titled Asian Fusion restaurant. [...]
I’ve actually eaten here before and the food is pretty amazing. The restaurant itself is also pretty nice. It’s spacious and modern looking. The prices on food are reasonable and it has a gorgeous view of the Manhattan skyline. Food is also served outside in a garden like area that is only a couple of hundred feet from the water during nice days. The only real downside is that part of the skyline is blocked by the Pepsi Cola sign. Other than that Shi is a classy place to have dinner. The food is also more of a fusion of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese traditional dishes mixed in with more Americanized ingredients though, so if you’re expecting something like Chinese takeout you won’t find that here.
For anyone that lives in the LIC area, you have to be happy that an upscale restaurant with good food and great drinks has finally opened. I live in the same building and my wife and I either eat in, or order in from from there 2-3 times per week. My wife is a sushi snob, I am a vegetarian and we are both very happy at the end of each meal. The brothers invested a lot of money brining this upscale restaurant to our area and we will do our best to dine their and support them. The food is very good (fresh) and the setting is fantastic. Not sure what all the “crying” is about another “asian fusion” restaurant is about, but think decor, great owners, fantastic views, so what’s the problem?
People are even bitching about the name of the place. Would you prefer a McDonald’s or a Taco Bell be there? Probably not! This is the only good sushi (asian fusion) in the area, so for all the haters, simply do not go. For people who are reading this and are undecided, it is worth the trip and the owners cannot be more helpful. Ooh yea, have a pear martini, they are excellent as well!
I went to many Asian restaurant in Queens…but Shi as new resto is the best after all. Atmosfere is killing :) u ( Decor, Lighting and View…wow). You must love it. Food are excellent ( steak cubes, Black Cod entree is a must try, sashimi is very fresh). Drinks are made by proffesional bartender (compare than UES Manhattan bar), Servers are very attentive and friendly. The owner is awesome, he really treat customers like his own family. One thing that’s bother me only the menu letter is so small and hard to read.
Absolutely I love this resto and will suggest all my friend to come and try. I believe in the future you have to make reservation in advance to get a table.

Enough Asian. We need a good Tex Mex Place.
