Getty Gas station begins transforming into ‘adaptive reuse bakery’

Long Island City Getty Gas Station to become bakery, 11th St @ 47th Rd

A while back, word came through the wire about the transformation of the Getty Gas Station (just the old auto-shop component, not the gas pumps) on 11th St @ 47th Road, into an ‘adaptive reuse bakery’ with a facade comprised of rolling pins. Well, it was speculated that this very, uh, creative renovation project was just a concept, not an actual plan. Au contraire! The plan is very much alive, and in fact, underway.

A few local residents who had parking leases in front of the auto shop have reported that therir parking stint has been over for a month now, as the space is being prepped for its renovation. If you forget what’s happening here, this will help:

“The Long Island City Bakery is an adaptive reuse project that is currently under development in Queens New York. The project is situated at the crossroads of the older commercial Long Island City and the newer residential Long Island City with housing developments near the East River.

The design approach was twofold. The first process involves the conversion of a gas station mechanics garage into a warm, inviting and sustainable environment. The second challenge is to evoke the idea of bakery into and architectural expression that responded to the owner’s tight budget.

Introducing steel channels and wooden dough rollers into the skin of the building, the exterior will be transformed from a decaying masonry façade into an innovative rain screen. To reduce the heat island effect caused by the existing asphalt parking area, concrete block and grass was introduced throughout the paving area. The vegetation continues up the building with Boston ivy that will provide a lively red composition to the wooden rainscreen.

Why is this a weird idea? There are a million gas stations all over this country that also sell food. It’s a great location actually, hopefully they will also sell some general deli goods. We need more stuff on 11th Street.

Anyone know when this place could open?

If they don’t make great baked goods, it won’t really matter to me how novel the building is after the first couple of times I’m there.

#3, I just spoke to a guy over at the rolling pin factory. There were some problems with their big lathe, but he thinks they’ll get it going by next week and, if they don’t drink at lunch, they might get back on schedule in a week or two.
This is pretty damned exciting!

They make bowling pins too. It’s over on 2nd St, between the Ferris wheel and the dry docks. Everything gets displaced though, by Hunters Point South, but that’s a long way off. Did you hear Michael Jackson died?

10, have you been to a good bakery lately? Much of the stuff is way above $15. Nice attempt at prolonging the annoying joke, though.

I could really use a $15 croissant right now.
