Just because I like the idea of a nice hotel in the neighborhood does not mean I am associated with the Z Hotel. I am just a local resident…don’t get so worked up, #13.

z hotels facade is way different, that is a really outdated rendering, it looks more industrial in real life

a) 12 sounds like someone affiliated with the Z hotel.

b) Art-o-Mat is (was) also a good example of true LIC vibe. Of the people, for the people. They threw a 100th birthday party for Rose. They showed LIC artists’ work. Also, something similar to what Lounge is doing for their worker who got assaulted. That is community, and LIC has a super strong one. Not everyone might be a part of it, but I would definitely say there is a CORE. I love LIC. It has its issues, but there is an actual soul here. I do agree that places like Ravel don’t necessarily integrate into the community so well, but on the other side Dutch Kills has, so it’s possible. And what I mean is that DK is a fancy branch of trendy LES bars, which is meant to draw from Manhattan, but also draws locally and I always run into ‘hoodies’ there, as well as seeing new people in from other places. Ravel… well, they have a different agenda. Like the strip club… ultimately business is for the sake of business, not usually contributing to the community. So I think the most ‘LIC Vibed’ places are those that do the latter, as well as the former.

I think the Z Hotel is one of the most exciting projects in LIC. I can’t wait to have a place nearby where family can stay and visit.

#10, places that can attract customers consistently will always do well. I don’t know what the Ravel-ification of LIC is about or if I even agree with it, but if someone want to open a raw, unique place that can be successful then go ahead and do it, but expect anyone to shed a tear for places that aren’t good or don’t serve the communities needs and wants. Its been said a million times. Service counts, quality counts, ambiance counts. Make investments in your business. You want to have a dumpy storefront – okay guess what people are going to start going to the newly renovated places. Know the market you are trying to serve. It may be the best thing in the world, but you open a rawest place in the world and no one is looking for raw then you are SOL. These things help quality business stay around for years to come.

8, your reaction sadly sums up what’s missing in LIC today. We seem to have settled into this attitude that raw, unique places like Ten 63 can’t succeed anymore. Why is that? It’s the “Ravel-ification” of LIC that I can’t stomach — this notion that only bullshit, faux glamorous places can survive in LIC. Yuck.

#4, I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to bring different energies and styles to LIC. What is a LIC vibe? Dutch Kills? Waterfront Crabhouse? Juniors? Communitea? It’s all a mish-mosh anyway. I say bring the Village, bring Brooklyn, bring SoHo to LIC! Bring it all! Old or new, trendy or old school, whatever it is, we just need more of it all.

why would you want a gansevoort vibe!!!! this is long island city, how about a lic vibe. thats the problem with the stupid ravel hotel, they try to be a trendy meatpacking hotel, why cant it just be a normal hotel with a cool bar!! its across the street form queensbridge!! get real

i think there’s some potential, as many people don’t mind staying outside manhattan if the place is nice and the price is right. but the reviews on yelp.com for Ravel are horrendous, hopefully these guys can improve!
