It has come to liQcity’s attention through multiple local tipsters that there’s been a bunch of recent muggings in the Hunters Point area, especially near the waterfront, that have apparently gone unreported through the local police. The buzz is:
A woman was mugged on Friday evening around 11pm at 47th Rd & Vernon Blvd. She was struck from behind and robbed of her possessions, including her coat. She was also denied the ability to file a police report with the 108th precinct, since she did not have ID on her. (direct from woman attacked)
A woman was mugged the prior weekend also at 47th Rd & Vernon Blvd, apparently also struck and robbed of her possessions, around 10pm. Police report supposedly unfiled. (from friend of woman attacked)
A man was mugged by multiple attackers, also robbed of his possessions at 44th Road & Vernon Blvd at an unknown time & day last week. Police report supposedly unfiled. (from friend of man attacked)
Four Vernon Blvd buildings/businesses between Jackson Ave & 46 Road were burglarized within the last two weeks. All incidents were supposedly able to file police reports.

Anable Basin, Long Island City, Queens waterfront.
The City is taking a new approach to resuscitating the Queens waterfront:
“The new Waterfront Text Amendment, which is being reviewed by Queens community leaders, would allow developers who build along waterfront areas to provide more lush promenades, better seating and improved lighting.
For the past 15 years, developers who have built certain structures along the waterfront have been required to provide access areas. But those regulations forced them to follow a series of rigid guidelines. Under the new regulations, developers would have more flexibility. They would even be allowed to open cafes and boat launches.”

Gossip Girl shoot, Long Island City
If you like all the filming of television shows that goes on in Long Island City, you will be sad to learn that it’s come to a grinding halt, and might not start up again.
“A state tax credit that brought television production in New York City to a record high last year has run out of money, threatening jobs in the one sector of the city’s economy that had been expected to thrive during the recession »

Painted building on Jackson Ave, next to Dutch Kills bar entrance, LIC
To kick off the linkage, there’s tons of press about the shooting that occurred this week on 21st St near 41st Ave in Long Island City.
We seem to have accidentally tripped a nerve yesterday with Arris Lofts dwellers who are concerned that our citing a rumor about hookers at Arris Lofts will give a bad impression of the neighborhood.
Let’s get a few things right on the table. liQcity is a blog. Curbed is a blog. Blogs deal in rumors and hearsay. None of the information on this or any other blog is pure fact. In fact (ha), most of it is just opinion. So treat it as such.
More relevantly, LIC is a transitioning industrial neighborhood in New York City. That much I’m sure we all can agree on. While Hunters Point is definitely safer than one might expect, there are still plenty of shady spots, and illicit activity absolutely transpires. To what degree? Well that’s the grey area. I’ve seen used condoms strewn about at Gantry Park – where they hookers or an overexcited couple who just put down 20% at the 5th St Lofts? Who knows.
