Beautiful building in LIC awaiting death by impending tower of glass & steel

Old building to be knocked down for Rockrose Tower, Long Island City

Old building to be knocked down for Rockrose Tower, Courthouse Sq, LIC

Walking around Courthouse Square this morning with a fellow LIC real estate obsessive, liQcity learned that this beautiful old building (along with the gigantic, adjacent parking lot behind it) at the corner of 44th Rd and Crescent St, right next to the United Nations Federal Credit Union, is being torn down to make way for a 42 story, 704 unit Rockrose rental building. Nice that it’s rentals - wish the price was as nice. Super lux apartments with fancy trimmings (expect any less?) - studios start at $2100/mo.

They’ll be knocking this building down and breaking ground in the spring. Supposedly there is one guy left living there, whose days are obviously numbered.

Incidentally, Rockrose also owns the triangular development site across the street as well. If anyone knows what’s going there, feel free to send us the scoop.

LIC Buzz: Secret Starbucks deal dead, grocery stores & the UN on the way

Faces on 5pointz Studios, Courthouse Sq, Long Island City

1) We all know that Starbucks killed the deal they had with Rockrose, but there was ANOTHER potential Starbucks in the works. Quietly slated to be at 10-50 Jackson, that deal is now dead too. Seems Starbucks is not ready for Long Island City, or vice versa. And no one’s crying.

2) Duane Reade and Amish Market in Rockrose #2 are confirmed for June 2008 opening. Excited and perhaps slightly wilted Queenswesters are standing by.

3) 2626 Jackson, aka Corner of Purves is back on track, after a few months of work stoppage. Scarano marches on in Courthouse Sq.

4) Gristedes (gasp! a grocery store!) is set to open in the Arris Lofts in April/May 2008.

5) The United Nations move of 2,600 workers to the UN Federal Credit Union building in Courthouse Square is on track for April/May. Get ready for the influx!

The beautiful red building that escaped landmarking faces the guillotine

Has anyone else noticed the demolition frenzy going on in LIC these last couple of weeks? It’s seriously been picking up. July 2008 is right around the corner, and Rockrose seems to be feeling the heat as well, since activity has begun on their site next to the United Nations Federal Credit Union.

Remember the beautiful building they’re knocking down? »
